BUILDING CHALLENGE #2 - NEW BUILD: HERALD WINS THE LOTTERY! - suzetter - 07-08-2011 04:00 PM

Thank you to all our participants for this challenge and congratulations to...

Sionelle!

...the winner of this challenge!
[/b]

First, I'd like to thank Shadow for coming up with this terrific idea for the second Build challenge. It was an idea Shadow had for his super cute, ginger haired, Sim family -- The Fitzgeralds. Aside from the build challenge there will be a second thread with a Sim makeover challenge to update the Fitzgerald family to suit their improved circumstances and lifestyle changes. I will post a link to the makeover at the bottom once Shadow has posted the Makeover Challenge thread with an upload of his Fitzgerald Sim family.
You can do one or the other or both challenges. The choice is yours -- just make sure you post your entrys on the right thread.
Happy Simming!

Herald Wins the Lottery

Dear Custom Sims:

I won! I won! Yes, I, Herald Fitzgerald after playing and praying for years have actually won the Sims lottery. A million simoleons, no less! $1,000,000!! Can you believe it?

For years now, each day as I stopped by the grocery store to buy my daily lottery ticket I prayed that I would win so I could give my family the very best life had to offer. Yet, as much as I wanted to win I think I didn’t really believe it was possible that something like this would happen to an ordinary Sim like me. But I did, and it’s true—miracles can happen.

This is why I am writing to you. I can now afford to give my family the good life but I need the help of your excellent builders.

Sometimes, I would daydream about being a lottery winner and what I would do with my prize money. The first thing that always came to mind was to buy a big beautiful Victorian Mansion for the family to live in. The kids are sharing a bedroom and always griping about having no privacy which is understandable since they’re getting older. Our teenage daughter Tina has taken to sometimes doing her homework sitting out on the front lawn and when I asked her why she said "Because, Dad, I need my space." Darn near broke my heart hearing that from my daughter as she sat in the dirt. We want the kids to have their own rooms but we just haven’t been able to afford something larger until now. I love being a firefighter and Fiona is devoted to teaching the kids at the elementary school where she works but as much as we love our vocations –teacher and fireman are not on the highest rung of the ladder when it comes to bringing home the bacon. In fact, we only have a second bedroom now because when our eldest was born Fiona’s parents (Mr. and Mrs. Hart) helped us out financially so we could add a small second bedroom onto the house. And while it was supposedly a loan we have yet to pay them back and they have never asked for the money or made mention of it. We’ve wanted to pay them back but living paycheck to paycheck we were never able to. Now we finally can. I’m a lucky man to have such nice in-laws. Guess they’re the reason why my wife Fiona turned out to be such a sweetheart.

I am looking to build my dream home and need your help. I know all about fire, smoke, and safety precautions but not a heck of a lot about home design. I know some of the things we’d want but not completely. I’d love to see what your builders come up with and maybe it would help if I told you a little about the family. Myself, I’m a fireman and have always been somewhat adventurous. Fiona says I’m flirty and teases me that she only puts up with it because I’m so darn handy around the house. I might flirt a little bit but it is all innocent and I think of myself more as being friendly. I am very handy though and hope to one day build a robot. My wife is quite friendly too but a little naïve as people can easily impress her. Fiona’s very artistic so I know she’ll love having more space to paint and sculpt. Oh, and a vegetable garden would be nice as she has a green thumb and would love to grow things. Also she’s a wiz on the computer and spends time doing that so a nice desk and new computer would be good. Out daughter Tina is a typical teenage girl. She got the artistic tendencies from her mom but she is quite brave and adventurous like her pops. (That’s my girl!) Our youngest Harry is a great kid but we have to keep a diligent eye on him as he’s a bit of a daredevil. A little too brave if you ask me. Fiona swears he has an adventurous streak that he gets from me. Maybe, but he definitely inherited his mother’s green thumb (he’ll like the garden as well).

Hope this gives you an idea of who we are and will help your builders in creating our dream home. I want to give my family something really lavish (but also keep a little reserve cash on hand for emergencies) so our budget limit for the new house and property is $850,000 simoleons. It can cost less but it can’t cost more.

Below is a list of things we want in the new home. Put whatever else you think we’ll need or perhaps want.

I hope you guys can help me with this because I have waited a long time to give my family a fabulous home.

Thank you in advance,

Herald Fitzgerald
Lottery Winner

p.s. Don’t forget to put smoke detectors wherever they may be needed (stove/fireplaces) as well as at least one on every floor (better safe than sorry).

Since I missed the last one I'd best sign up now before I forget :D

Though I'm not at all sure I can even come close to using 850,000 Simoleans  I'll be luck to hit even half that Laughtingoutloud_32x32

I love big, lavish houses and could totally spend $850k without blinking an eye but doing a Victorian House would be a challenge for me since I veer towards minimalist modern or quaint cottage. You have Shadow to thank for the big budget which I'm sure will be a relief after the skimpy budget of challenge 1. This second building challenge is more expensive since it is a new build on a large lot rather than being a renovation.

Shadow's Sim Family is really cute, as well, which you'll see once he posts them for the makeover challenge.

There's now achivement icons for challenge participants and winners. Regina is going to work on improving the icon graphics but we wanted to acknowlege the partcipants and winner of challenge #1 so she was able to put these together quickly for now.

RE: BUILDING CHALLENGE #2 - NEW BUILD: HERALD WINS THE LOTTERY! - sionelle - 07-12-2011 02:22 AM

Hi, I would love to join this challenge, but I have two questions first:

1) Can a complete newbie join? (I have Sims 3 building experience, but I am a newbie to this forum.)

2) When is the deadline for completion? (If I missed it in the original post, I apologize.)

Thanks!

RE: BUILDING CHALLENGE #2 - NEW BUILD: HERALD WINS THE LOTTERY! - Ghost - 07-13-2011 10:39 AM

I don't have Hot tubs. Are they in Late Night or Generations? And would a 5x5 tiled area where one can be installed be acceptable? (I'm assuming they are about the same size as Sims 2, so you would need 3x3 for the tub plus stairs, and another 1 tile around it beyond that for people to stomp their feet in when it's already full.)

RE: BUILDING CHALLENGE #2 - NEW BUILD: HERALD WINS THE LOTTERY! - suzetter - 07-13-2011 01:08 PM

Hi Ghost :)! Thank you for asking -- I didn't catch that the hot tub requires an EP (LN). Shadow wanted a hot tub in the master bathroom but since it requires an EP the Hot Tub now optional. You can leave an area for the installation of one if that works in your design but it is not mandatory. Actually, I've seen indoor hot tubs but never in a bathroom. However, I have seen uber large whirlpool tubs in bathrooms.

I've put you on the list for the challenge.

If anyone notices any other requirements that need an EP, please let me know, I want to keep these challenges base game friendly. I don't always catch that since I have (WA/AMB/LN) and get use to seeing the objects in the game and forget they are not base game objects.
Thanks.

Ok here is the deal, If you don't have an expansion pack that a requirement is nessary then you don't have to have it in your house, just when you post your challenge house just make a note that you didn't have a certain expansion pack,

RE: BUILDING CHALLENGE #2 - NEW BUILD: HERALD WINS THE LOTTERY! - suzetter - 07-13-2011 11:50 PM

Shadow, if an item is optional they do not have to note it.

RE: BUILDING CHALLENGE #2 - NEW BUILD: HERALD WINS THE LOTTERY! - shad0w - 07-14-2011 11:50 AM

Yes your right.

RE: BUILDING CHALLENGE #2 - NEW BUILD: HERALD WINS THE LOTTERY! - Ghost - 07-17-2011 08:19 AM

Now I'm remembering why I don't use lots bigger than 30x30. My processor doesn't like them.

(Just grumbling about losing 2 hours of work just before going back to Edit Town to save it. Oh well, I can re-think some of that, anyway.)

RE: BUILDING CHALLENGE #2 - NEW BUILD: HERALD WINS THE LOTTERY! - Simbody - 07-17-2011 02:36 PM

I don't like using Edit town to build period. There are times I forget and quit and have accidentally clicked don't save instead of cancel and loose what I've done :@

Well I'm only have furnished, it's slow going with such a large house. I have 1 and 1/2 floors done and that leaves 3+ more to furnish! Walls are all where I want them, and the exterior is done. Plus most of my CAST walls need to be found again. I have a bad habit of clearing out my saved ones in game and only having them in houses I've built. So I need to go through and save a few, making new takes me way too much time  So far I only have about 2 dozen saved walls and floors instead of a hundred or so :D
